Larry O'Toole regrets Old Shieling demise....

Councillor Larry O'Toole has expressed concern at recent closures of popular leisure amenities in the Dublin North East area. It has recently been announced that the Old Shieling Hotel in Raheny is to close and apartments are to be built on the site.

Commenting, Larry said "This venerable, old hotel was a popular social outlet for generations of Raheny people and Northsiders generally. It will be much missed by those who found a welcome and hospitality there. Many elderly people in the area will lose out as they have no other suitable meeting point."

"It is a worrying and increasing trend where we see places like the Old Shieling and the Dollymount House fall victim to the worst aspects of development in Dublin. There seems to be an insatiable hunger for yet more anonymous apartment developments at the expense of valuable social amenities. Howth village is experiencing this as well, much to its cost. At City Council level we need to challenge this."
