Fianna Fáil Oireachtas members challenged on unemployment

Sinn Féin representative Mícheál Mac Donncha has described as "appalling" the level of unemployment on the Northside, including the latest figures showing 5,701 people signing on at the Social Welfare office in Kilbarrack. Mr. Mac Donncha stated:

"The relentless rise in the level of unemployment spells real hardship for families and individuals across this city. There are now over 5,700 people signing on at the Social Welfare office in Kilbarrack, that's a rise of over 2,700 in two years in this one area of Dublin.

"I am calling on Fianna Fáil TD Michael Woods and Senator Martin Brady to tell us exactly what they and their Government colleagues are doing to address this disastrous level of unemployment. Deputy Woods and his fellow Fianna Fáil TDs were elected in 2007 by the people in the genuine but tragically mistaken belief that returning a Fianna Fail government could prolong the Celtic Tiger. Little did they know that Fianna Fáil had already sown the seeds of destruction and it was only after the re-election of Bertie Ahern that people realised they had been conned as no electorate was ever conned before. And it was the same Bertie Ahern who appointed Martin Brady to the Seanad.

"When have Deputy Woods or Senator Brady ever faced the people to explain their policies, or lack of them, since 2007? I challenge these two Oireachtas members to a public debate on unemployment. We in Sinn Féin have set out our proposals for job creation. Let the Fianna Fáil Oireachtas members set out theirs."
